Innovation and transparency: an interactive virtual room to explore the future coastline of Malaga

Digital visualisation as a key tool for public participation

As part of the development of the Málaga Coastal Plan, one of the most significant urban initiatives at national level, an interactive virtual room has been set up with the clear aim of informing and involving the public in the decisions that will shape the future of the city’s waterfront.

The Málaga Coastal Plan is an ambitious urban and transport transformation designed to take traffic underground along the seafront, Paseo de las Palmeras/Muelle Heredia, creating a linear park, boosting public transport and connecting the historic centre with the port. The full project can be viewed at https://planmalagalitoral.malaga.eu/

The digital experience developed is available at: https://www.malaga.eu/recursos/web/plan-malaga-litoral/sala-virtual-malaga/126_Sala%20Virtual%20Malaga.html.

The virtual exhibition space translates a highly technical and complex project into an accessible, visual and intuitive environment, bridging the gap between technical information and public understanding. Through this space, users can explore the project, understand the various interventions and form an informed opinion, thereby facilitating more informed participation in the decision-making process.

The solution takes the form of a digital recreation of the interior of the Pompidou Centre in Málaga, conceived as a virtual exhibition space where both the winning proposal and those of the other participating teams are presented. This approach allows users to navigate the exhibition, compare alternatives and clearly understand the proposed urban transformation, all via an accessible web platform requiring no technical knowledge.

This experience highlights how digitalisation improves transparency, facilitates the understanding of complex projects and strengthens public trust, turning citizens into active participants in the process.

From a technological perspective, the solution integrates digital visualisation tools that enable the creation of interactive tours and the structuring of information in a clear and accessible manner from any device, establishing itself as an effective tool for communicating infrastructure and urban transformation projects.

The development of this solution has been made possible thanks to our collaboration with Málaga City Council, whom we thank for the trust placed in us.

Initiatives of this kind form part of the way in which TYPSA approaches project communication in Spain and internationally, aligning with technological progress and the need to facilitate access to information, reduce the time taken to understand it and improve decision-making. In this context, digital communication is established as a determining factor in the success of projects, by transforming technical complexity into accessible, useful and actionable knowledge.
