TYPSA has participated in the development of the preliminary design for the expansion of both airside and landside areas at Corfu International Airport in Greece, contributing with its expertise in airport planning, operational configuration and capacity analysis.
The measures required to improve the capacity and functionality of the existing infrastructure were defined, whilst maintaining operational safety standards at all times and ensuring the continuity of operations.
Airside, works included the refurbishment and reconfiguration of approximately 9,100 m² of apron in the northern part of the airport. The layout of aircraft parking positions was optimised by incorporating new positions for Code C aircraft, as well as the corresponding areas for ground support equipment (GSE). The design of pavements, drainage, apron lighting and surface markings was also included.
As a key part of the design development, aircraft manoeuvring simulations were carried out to validate the new operational configurations and verify that parking, taxiing and servicing operations could be carried out safely and efficiently.
Landside, the contract included the design of new road accesses and the reorganisation of space designated for ground traffic. Key planned works include the construction of a new roundabout, the creation of taxi waiting areas, the expansion of passenger pick-up and drop-off zones, and the reconfiguration of existing car parks.

To ensure the proper functioning of these facilities, specific traffic simulations were carried out for light vehicles, buses and taxis, enabling the analysis of traffic flows and the optimisation of the capacity of the proposed new solutions.
Another key aspect was the definition of a phased implementation strategy. This planning enabled the establishment of a roadmap for the future development of the works, minimising disruption to airport operations and ensuring business continuity throughout all construction phases.
Our involvement took place in one of the Mediterranean’s most renowned tourist destinations. Located in the Ionian Sea, the island of Corfu is famous for its coastal landscapes, its historical heritage and its old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every year it welcomes millions of visitors from across Europe, making its airport a strategic infrastructure for the island’s connectivity and the development of its tourism industry. Furthermore, it is internationally renowned for offering one of the most spectacular approaches in Europe, with take-offs and landings over the sea that attract numerous aviation enthusiasts.
At TYPSA, we continue to explore new opportunities to contribute our knowledge and experience to airport design.
