The basin is the largest in the Dry Corridor region, with a surface area of 7,440km². The project focuses on guaranteeing water supply and preventing droughts, and protection against floods.

Multipurpose reservoir: Storage capacity of 420 Mm³ for drinking water supply, irrigation and power generation. – Morolica RCC Dam, 109 m high and 335 long, spillway capacity of 19,000 m³/s

Water supply and drinking water treatment plant for 230,000 inhabitants in the city of Choluteca.
