Opening ceremony for the initial phase of the Agra metro

The city of Agra is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in northern India, and has a metropolitan area of approximately two million inhabitants. It is home to the iconic Taj Mahal, one of the main tourist destinations in the country.

In order to improve mobility of both residents and visitors in a safe and environmentally friendly way, construction of the city´s metro network has commenced, managed by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation, and with a completion date set for December 2025.

The network consists of two lines with a total of 29.6 km. Line 1 extends from Sikandra to Taj East Gate, with a length of 14.3 km, of which 6.6 km are elevated sections and 7.7 km are underground, executed with EPBM tunnelling machine. With 14 stations, emblematic places such as Agra Fort and Taj Mahal are connected. Line 2 runs between Agra Cantt and Kalindi Vihar, with a length of 15.4 km and 15 stations, consisting entirely of elevated sections.

Both lines have standard track width (1,435 mm) with electrification powered by a third 750 VDC rail. The signage uses communications-based train control (CBTC) and is designed for a maximum speed of 90 km/hour. The system includes an operating centre for each line: for Line 1 located in PAC Depot, with an extension of 16.3 ha; and for Line 2 located on a plot of 11.9 ha, in the Kalindi Vihar Depot.

Agra’s rapid transport network has been recognised for its commitment to excellence, with the international award at the 3rd edition of the Rail Analysis Innovation & Excellence Summit 2022, held in India.

TYPSA leads the consortium that carries out the general advisory of the comprehensive detailed design. The contract term is for 60 months during which the general consultancy is carried out, including the design and supervision of the construction of the circular tunnels, using BIM technology, testing and commissioning, and the management for one year covering the defects liability period, after the completion of the works.

For this undertaking, an important technical team has been formed of over 100 people who, in different roles, manage the entire project, from the initial design to the commissioning. All this requires careful planning and effective coordination to ensure the success of the project, in which the experience gained by TYPSA in other major METRO projects has proved decisive.

In March 2024, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, officially opened the first section between Jama Masjid and Taj East Gate. This 7-km long section, with 6 stations (3 of which are underground), was declared as a priority, and has been an important achievement, both for the development of the Agra metro and for TYPSA´s dedication to the project.

Meanwhile, the Agra metro project continues to advance, with approximately 6.7 km under construction and another 17.5 km about to begin. TYPSA remains committed to promoting Agra’s urban transformation, fostering its sustainable development. With each mileston reached, TYPSA reaffirms its leadership position in engineering consulting, shaping a brighter future for Agra and its residents, under the umbrella of the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation. (UPMRC).
