In September 2025, the working sessions of the African Association of Road Maintenance Funds (ARMFA/AFERA) were held in Nairobi, coinciding with the annual meeting of its executive committee. In this context, the reference study on road maintenance funds in Africa was launched. The study, promoted by the Africa Transport Policy Programme (SSATP), a World Bank programme, funded by the European Commission (DG INTPA), was carried out by the TYPSA-AGRER-RAUROS consortium in the role of support services, and led by its Strategic Consulting division.
The event brought together representatives of more than thirty national road maintenance funds from across Africa, together with regional and international institutions, financial partners and multilateral agencies. The relevance of this meeting lay in its dual dimension: on the one hand, validating the methodology, the questionnaire and the tools that will be used in the comparative diagnosis of road maintenance funds, making possible the evaluation of their institutional maturity, their governance mechanisms and the incorporation of resilience and equity criteria. On the other hand, representing an institutional milestone by strengthening the role of ARMFA as a key player in the articulation of policies and reforms that ensure the sustainability of the African road network.
TYPSA, as the leading company in the contract, played a prominent role in organising technical sessions, streamlining working groups and presenting analysis tools. Their contribution was key to guiding debates towards practical and operational recommendations, aligned with the vision of the “next generation of Road Maintenance Funds” that will guide the regional agenda in the coming years. TYPSA’s participation in this major contract reaffirms the company’s capacity to lead high-impact projects, combining technical excellence, experience in institutional management and sensitivity to social and climate challenges.
This launch is also a strategic opportunity for the Group to consolidate its presence on the African continent and to highlight its experience in the resilient management of road assets. The study will make it possible to design specific proposals to improve funding and operating mechanisms, with direct benefits for the mobility of millions of citizens: safer roads, greater connectivity to markets and basic services, reduction in transport costs and creation of economic opportunities at a local level.
With this project, TYPSA reinforces its commitment to sustainable development and to the promotion of innovative solutions that contribute to the prosperity of African communities and to the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals linked to resilient, equitable and sustainable infrastructures.
