New freight terminal at the Port of Immingham, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom

Associated British Ports (ABP), the leading port group in the United Kingdom, together with Stena Line, one of the world’s largest ferry operators, is driving the development of a major new Ro-Ro freight terminal at the Port of Immingham, Lincolnshire. This investment will provide a significant uplift in capacity, resilience and efficiency for freight movements between the UK and continental Europe.

The Port of Immingham, located on the shores of the North Sea on the south bank of the Humber Estuary, is the largest in the United Kingdom by tonnage, handling around 46 million tonnes of cargo annually, and is a key component of the supply chain for the sustainable generation of electricity and other energy sources.

The strong and sustained demand for freight and Ro-Ro traffic, along with the need to modernise and consolidate port operations to meet future growth, have led ABP to undertake this project, which aligns with the UK government’s goal of strengthening the country’s position as a leading power in the Ro-Ro freight trade, a key sector for its economy.

The new facility will introduce upgraded berth infrastructure, expanded marshalling and terminal areas, and modernised landside access arrangements. These improvements are designed to enhance operational performance, reduce congestion and support the long term sustainable development of the port.

Specifically, the terminal comprises, on the seaside, a new quay and its associated infrastructure, an access jetty, a pipeline bridge and an access ramp; and on the landside, parking areas, buildings, roads and a bridge over an existing railway line.

TYPSA has been working with ABP and contractor Dragados throughout the development process to bring the scheme to Notice to Proceed. TYPSA’s involvement has included engineering design, technical advisory services and coordination across multiple disciplines to ensure the project meets operational, environmental and regulatory requirements.

With the commencement of construction activities on site, TYPSA will continue to support Dragados and ABP through the construction phase, providing ongoing technical input and assurance as the terminal progresses towards delivery.

TYPSA’s contribution to this scheme builds on our growing track record in UK ports and reinforces our strong working relationship with ABP as they continue to develop their portfolio of infrastructure investments across the Humber and wider network.
