After 29 months of work, TYPSA has completed the drafting of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for Trabzon, a historic city located on the Black Sea, with a population of more than 800,000 inhabitants and the most important port in Türkiye on that sea.
The plan represents a strategic advance in the development of transport within the city´s metropolitan area and foresees the promotion of sustainable measures such as the creation of low-emission zones and pedestrian streets, the encouragement of bicycle use, and the elimination of transport infrastructures that have previously constituted physical barriers to urban mobility. This ambitious initiative is co-financed by the European Union within the framework of the IPA programme, an instrument for pre-accession assistance for countries aspiring to join the EU.
To mark the completion of the drafting of the plan, the Turkish government organised an international conference on sustainable urban mobility plans, held in November. The event included the project´s closing ceremony, attended by the Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure and the Head of Financial Cooperation of the EU delegation in the country.

José Laffond, as TYPSA´s project leader, presented the results of the plan and moderated the technical panels on the objectives, challenges and new regulations of SUMP, referring to TYPSA success stories in Italy and Andalusia.
The project, carried out in collaboration with two Turkish engineering consultancy firms, has been a success, as recognised both by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and by the Trabzon Metropolitan City Council, who provided full support and fostered an excellent collaboration atmosphere throughout its implementation.
From here, we congratulate the consulting team composed of TYPSA and the collaborating companies Bogazici and Kaiser for the excellent work done, and we express our gratitude to the Ministry and City Council for their cooperation and support, which enabled the project to be completed satisfactorily.
