This project is part of the same metropolitan\u00a0expansion\u00a0programme in which TYPSA participated with\u00a0great success\u00a0in\u00a0the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE) project, an experience that provides a solid technical foundation for\u00a0now\u00a0tackling the challenges of\u00a0extending\u00a0this\u00a0section.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A key project within the Toronto network<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Yonge corridor is the most used north-south\u00a0route\u00a0in the system\u00a0managed by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC).\u00a0The\u00a0extension to the north\u00a0will:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">strengthen connectivity with expanding areas, providing access to more than 26,000 residents\u00a0living near the new stations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reduce travel\u00a0times downtown.\u00a0An estimated\u00a022,900\u00a0people\u00a0who work downtown live\u00a0within walking distance of the stations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">increase the overall capacity of the network, with more than 94,000\u00a0additional\u00a0passengers per day.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">improve operational resilience in the face of future growth.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reduce the usual congestion on this\u00a0north-south\u00a0route, with an estimated reduction of more than 7,700 vehicles\/km\u00a0during the morning rush hour.\u00a0The result will be a reduction in annual greenhouse gas emissions of more than 4,800 tonnes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The complexity of\u00a0the\u00a0environment,\u00a0which is\u00a0dense, urbanised, and highly conditioned by existing services, requires precise\u00a0technical solutions and exhaustive coordination between teams.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-81210 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/METRO_TORONTO3_26-800x721.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"721\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/METRO_TORONTO3_26-800x721.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.typsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/METRO_TORONTO3_26-1024x923.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.typsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/METRO_TORONTO3_26-768x692.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.typsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/METRO_TORONTO3_26.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235165252 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235165252 BCX0\">Schematic view of the Yonge North Subway Extension route<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tendering process\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As in the case of\u00a0the\u00a0westward\u00a0extension of the\u00a0ECWE, the end client (Metrolinx\u00a0and Infrastructure Ontario)\u00a0has packaged the work in a way that,\u00a0while unusual in\u00a0other international markets, is already familiar to the TYPSA team.\u00a0The main civil works package is\u00a0the Advance Tunnel Contract, which includes the construction of the tunnels, the launch and extraction shafts for the tunnel boring machines, the end walls of the future stations, one of the\u00a0emergency exit buildings and, in this\u00a0case, the design, but not the construction, of the communication galleries between the two tubes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As this is a\u00a0design-build-finance tender, the team that so successfully completed the ECWE\u00a0design-build\u00a0decided\u00a0to\u00a0join forces once again. The\u00a0construction\u00a0joint venture\u00a0formed by\u00a0Dragados-Aecon-Ghella\u00a0chose to call itself North End Connectors for this new contract,\u00a0once again\u00a0relying on the\u00a0engineering\u00a0joint venture\u00a0formed\u00a0by\u00a0TYPSA and EXP, this time under the leadership of TYPSA\u00a0and with the participation of\u00a0Pedelta\u00a0as a subcontractor for the design of the launch shaft.\u00a0It should be noted that the ECWE project was selected\u00a0as Best Project of the Year 2025 by the\u00a0Tunnel Association of Canada\u00a0(TAC).\u00a0In the final phase of the tender process, Dragados was replaced by FCC, which took over the leadership of the\u00a0construction joint venture.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our team\u00a0developed a solution for the tunnel boring machine launch area that significantly reduced the\u00a0technical and\u00a0time\u00a0risks\u00a0compared to the\u00a0reference\u00a0design\u00a0solution\u00a0developed\u00a0by the client.\u00a0The significant reduction in the\u00a0risk\u00a0profile and\u00a0the\u00a0limited impact on third\u00a0parties\u00a0(in particular Canadian\u00a0National Railway, CN Rail) was recognised by the end client as one of the main reasons why our team was selected as the winner, thus beginning the development of the detailed design phase.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The scope of TYPSA&#8217;s\u00a0work\u00a0on\u00a0the Yonge corridor<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">TYPSA\u00a0is responsible for\u00a0the design and analysis of various underground elements of\u00a0particular relevance:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tunnels constructed\u00a0using tunnel boring machines (TBMs)\u00a0and\u00a0sequential excavation methods (SEM), including\u00a0not only connecting galleries but also two\u00a0emergency exits\u00a0excavated in the mine along with their ramps and galleries.<\/li>\n<li>Subsidence analysis along the entire route.<\/li>\n<li>Technical\u00a0management\u00a0and BIM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This approach combines tunnel engineering, geotechnics, structures and BIM, providing technical robustness and multidisciplinary capabilities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Where we work from: a team distributed\u00a0between\u00a0Canada,\u00a0Spain\u00a0and the United States.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The project is being developed through an international collaboration model:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Canada (Toronto):\u00a0direct relationship with the contractor and continuous review of construction solutions,\u00a0dialogue with\u00a0Metrolinx, EXP and\u00a0Pedelta, and\u00a0agile response to new construction constraints.\u00a0Canada\u00a0also\u00a0leads\u00a0the\u00a0subsidence\u00a0analysis.<\/li>\n<li>Spain (Madrid and Barcelona):\u00a0structural design of tunnels and shafts, advanced geotechnical calculations and BIM coordination, carried out by teams specialising in underground works.<\/li>\n<li>USA:\u00a0leadership in\u00a0TBM tunnel design, in coordination with the production team in Spain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This integration allows us to combine\u00a0local presence\u00a0with\u00a0global technical capacity,\u00a0which is one of\u00a0TYPSA&#8217;s\u00a0hallmarks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technical challenges of the project\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0extension of the\u00a0Yonge North\u00a0line\u00a0presents\u00a0particular challenges\u00a0that differentiate its design from other recent projects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Variable geology: combination of soils and weathered rock, with high water tables.<\/li>\n<li>Dense urban environment: need to control settlement and impact on sensitive infrastructure.\u00a0Much of the route runs\u00a0under\u00a0Yonge St., one of\u00a0Toronto&#8217;s\u00a0main\u00a0avenues.<\/li>\n<li>High contractual demands, with strict requirements\u00a0regarding\u00a0third-party impacts, impact limitation, design of\u00a0temporary excavation support structures (SOE), etc.<\/li>\n<li>Coexistence with multiple stakeholders\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">requiring continuous coordination,\u00a0harmonised technical\u00a0criteria\u00a0and\u00a0highly complex\u00a0management\u00a0of\u00a0contractual requirements.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These constraints have\u00a0required\u00a0highly refined construction solutions, with intensive use of three-dimensional models, non-linear\u00a0analyses\u00a0and\u00a0high-level\u00a0soil-structure interaction assessments.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the main technical challenges was the location of the tunnel boring machine launch site.\u00a0Various constraints on the route imposed in previous phases, such as the location of an existing station to the north and the\u00a0prohibition of\u00a0the route running through a nearby cemetery, meant that the launch shaft had to be located in an area with high groundwater levels, low ground conditions and the railway tracks\u00a0of\u00a0CN Rail,\u00a0the country&#8217;s main freight transport network,\u00a0next to the pile screens of the shaft.\u00a0The TYPSA technical team\u00a0considered that\u00a0the solution proposed in the\u00a0Reference Project\u00a0had shortcomings that generated an unacceptable risk profile\u00a0and also\u00a0would also have\u00a0a\u00a0significant\u00a0impact\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0construction schedule. This decision was recognised by the client as another key factor in the award of the contract. The design is at an advanced stage, while work on the launch shaft has already begun\u00a0so that the box excavation can be ready to receive the\u00a0tunnel boring machines\u00a0when their manufacture\u00a0is complete.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The main challenges facing the\u00a0team\u00a0are not so much technical in nature, as the team\u00a0with its wealth of experience\u00a0can\u00a0tackle\u00a0them\u00a0with confidence, but\u00a0rather relate to the management of third parties\u00a0(stakeholders) and the\u00a0approval process by the end\u00a0client.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The experience gained in\u00a0the Eglinton project\u00a0has helped to understand the complex approval processes for deliverables\u00a0in\u00a0contracts with\u00a0Metrolinx\u00a0and Infrastructure Ontario, but each review process involves multiple meetings in which each comment is reviewed\u00a0in detail. This requires a great deal of patience\u00a0from\u00a0the project drafting team,\u00a0explaining every decision taken down to the last detail.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The end client&#8217;s\u00a0confidence\u00a0in both TYPSA and the construction team\u00a0has been\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0by the client&#8217;s decision to launch a\u00a0collaborative design\u00a0process for the\u00a0Steeles and Clark station boxes, as well\u00a0as\u00a0the Royal Orchard cavern,\u00a0directly involving our team without a prior tender.
