In addition, it is well known that many of the existing wastewater treatment plants in Brazil have operational problems, often due to design deficiencies and in the execution of works. Although these are allowed by Brazilian legislation, it is still unclear as to whether they are the most appropriate, given the possible environmental impacts on the atmosphere, soil and groundwater. The recovery of nitrogenous compounds from effluent and sludge ultimately reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the demand for chemical fertilizers and the supply of nitrogen to sustainable water bodies. Both WWTPs are located in the metropolitan region of S\u00e3o Paulo, an area characterised by municipalities with a high population concentration, including the most populated in the country, S\u00e3o Paulo, with nearly 11.5 million inhabitants (IBGE, 2022).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In mid-2024, SABESP went through a privatisation process and is currently managed by a private company. The arrival of a private entity in the management of the company naturally strengthened the focus on optimising wastewater treatment plants, energy efficiency, the use of clean technologies and, consequently, the extension of the concept of circular economy to other exploited treatment plants.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In this context, SABESP has requested the inclusion in the contract (under negotiation) of two other units, also located in the region: the S\u00e3o Miguel WWTP and the Barueri WWTP. Finally, procedures and technologies for the efficiency and optimisation of maintenance were also presented, with the aim of achieving the maximum use of WWTP assets and saving resources.
