WindFloat Atlantic offshore wind farm


This is the first commercial offshore wind farm in operation in southern Europe. Located 20 km off the coast of the Portuguese town of Viana do Castelo, it comprises three high-power wind turbines (8.5 MW each), installed on large floating platforms.

Assembly of the turbine on a floating platform achieves one of the main competitive advantages of this type of solution since it can be assembled while at port, benefiting from onshore conditions that facilitate a whole battery of advantages in terms of economy, logistics and safety. Once assembled at port, the floating wind-turbine platform is towed by tugboat to its final operating position.

TYPSA on LOI 130 International Architectural Competition first prize winning team


TYPSA and its subsidiary MC2 are part of the team that has won first prize in the European Commission’s International Architectural Competition for the design of the LOI 130 office complex in Brussels, together with the architects Rafael de la Hoz, Perkins & Will and Latz+Partner.

The Loi 130 competition to replace ageing Commission premises in Brussels is the first of this type to be launched from the EU capital.

The new buildings are part of the Loi urban project in Brussels and must fulfil the set objectives based on sustainability and energy efficiency. Construction will generate 50% less emissions and the new buildings will consume 70% less energy compared to the Commission’s existing offices.

Widening the cable-stayed bridge over the Rande strait: an engineering milestone


The AP-9 Atlantic Motorway crosses the Vigo estuary via the 400-metre-span, cable-stayed Rande Bridge. Widening the Rande Bridge forms part of the motorway expansion works that will achieve a 42% capacity increase and address rising traffic volumes.

The works to widen the iconic Rande Bridge were the most spectacular of all the widening works between O Morrazo and Teis, due to their technical complexity. They were based on three fundamental design considerations: maximum use of the existing bridge structure, zero impact on traffic and road safety, and zero environmental impact on the estuary.

Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, Madrid. Spain


The new Wanda Metropolitano football stadium is the result of the refurbishment and expansion of the old La Peineta athletics stadium, which was completed in 1994.

TYPSA developed the detailed design and provided construction supervision assistance for the structure and the foundations. The brief also included collaborating with the roof designer on the roof-to-structure interface.

The stadium expansion had to address very specific functional and technical constraints such as UEFA and FIFA recommendations, evacuation safety requirements and optimum visibility. The many demands of football as a source of entertainment also had to be taken into account to provide spectators with a good view and proximity to the field, VIP boxes, shops, restaurants, [...]

I-15 Express Lanes Project in Riverside, California, USA


Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) and its partners in the project, the California Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, are carrying out substantial improvements on a stretch of Interstate Highway I-15, with a USD 471 million investment.

A design and build contract was awarded to a consortium comprising the construction companies Skanska and Ames, and the engineering firm AZTEC-TYPSA, which is responsible for carrying out the engineering design.

This highway is one of the USA’s major north-south routes. It crosses 6 states and is an essential truck/passenger route between the Canadian border, in the state of Montana, and southern California.

HS2 High Speed Line, United Kingdom


In 2010, the British government decided to modernise and expand the high speed rail network with a new line to the North in addition to the existing one between the Channel Tunnel and London. This new line is HS2 (High Speed Line 2) and will connect London and Birmingham (Phase 1) in 2026, later extending to Manchester and Leeds (Phase 2) in 2033 in a ‘Y’ network.

The line is designed for a maximum speed of 400 km/h and will deliver peak-hour frequencies of up to 18 trains each way when it is completed. The total projected cost is £56 billion.

ROAD-BIM is an innovative research project under development thanks to a grant from the Feder Innterconecta 2016 R&D programme in the Spanish Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation Plan. TYPSA is participating in partnership with a group of companies led by Sacyr Construcción and comprising the software company Aplitop, the BIM consulting firm Apogea, and Valencia Polytechnic University.

The project’s goal is to make construction project development and road safety management more efficient throughout the entire lifecycle by applying BIM methodology to information management processes. CORTI I wind farm, Bahía Blanca, Argentina.


Corti Wind Farm is located northeast of the city of Bahía Blanca, in the province of Buenos Aires. The farm comprises 29 wind turbines, each with a tower height of 87 m, and has a total installed power of 100 MW.

Engineering and construction supervision services were delivered for the farm and for the balance of plant.

The owner's engineering, included:

  • The full geotechnical campaign and civil engineering design of the wind farm including 20 km of internal roads and the hydrological study.
  • Review and verification of all the detailed electrical infrastructure designs including medium voltage collection system, two substations, and high voltage line between them.
