environmental development along the banks of the bullaque river
Technical assistance is being provided to the Guadiana Hydrographical Confederation with respect to the works of fluvial restoration, improvement of environmental conditions and social use, currently underway on the banks of the Bullaque River in the province of Cuidad Real.
The Bullaque is one of the main rivers flowing into the Guadiana, and in addition to its significant ecological value – a section of its upper reaches runs through the Cabañeros Natural Park – there is a significant demand for public use by residents in the municipalities of Retuerta del Bullaque, Pueblonuevo del Bullaque, El Torno, El Robledo, Porzuna, Piedrabuena and Luciana, through which it flows. Consequently the Confederation started a project for the conservation and improvement of the banks which, in turn, permits a more ordered social use of this feature.
The activities, which are being carried out along a 100 km stretch of the river’s course are the following:
- Creation of a pathway along the length of the river.
- Development of recreational areas.
- Replacement of the native vegetation of Ribera.
- Improvement of the access to the river.
- Recuperation of traditional water tables.
- Installation of elements for the integration of existing installations into the surrounding landscape.
- Collection of litter and waste materials and subsequent transport to a refuse site.
- Channel protection and tackling erosion.
- In-depth studies of the key ecological, landscape, economic and social factors.
