In the field of geology and geotechnics, TYPSA relies on a large team of more than 40 specialized technicians who are specifically dedicated to the field, and able to provide an integral service in order to deal with all stages of study, analysis, project and technical assistance.

Activities carried-out range from on-site sampling, on-site and lab tests and subsequent interpretation and analysis. TYPSA has at its disposal the most advanced design tools, both commercial and of its own, to carry out all kinds of analysis, calculations and studies related to geology and geotechnics.

This capacity allows providing solutions to all kinds of complex geotechnical issues. Proof of this are all the great projects, and particularly those of underground works within urban areas, in which TYPSA’s Geotechnics Department has been involved intensely in the last few years, offering its services both to Public Administrations and to Construction Firms and other organizations.

Our activity is characterized by sustaining a high degree of specialization and by being permanently updated by means of the latest technology in the field of soil and solid-rock mechanics.

Fully conscious of the critical importance of geotechnics in any project, TYPSA applies procedures with maximum-safety criteria. Accordingly, it is possible to succeed and be efficient in dealing with geotechnical design issues and to offer products of maximum quality, technically and economically, in this field.

In short, the main lines of activity of the Geotechnics Department are:

  • Geological and geotechnic studies
  • Study of materials for their use in ground works
  • Stability of cuttings and fillings
  • Structures foundation
  • Tunnels and underground works
  • Terrain improvement treatments
  • Tense deformation numerical analysis
  • Filtration analysis in porous mediums
  • Study of geotechnical pathologies and corrective measures
  • Examination and control

Tunnels for the M-30's Southern Bypass (Madrid)

Among the many civil work interventions carried out in urban areas in the latest years it is worth highlighting the spectacular tunnels for the M30’s southern bypass which were placed into service in 2007. TYPSA has been involved in the project and during construction of these twin tunnels, 4,200 m long and 15.20 m in diameter, which establish a new world record in terms of large-diameter tunnels made by machines of the EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) type.

For the project’s geological-geotechnical aspects, TYPSA has carried out –besides geological and terrain-characterization studies- preliminary subsidence estimations (settlements, tilting, distortions and deformities), risk-analysis, and preventive measures to protect existing buildings and structures which includes designing treatments to reinforce and improve the terrain, micro-pile barriers, jet-grouting, reinforcement slabs by means of priming and settlement-compensation systems, either from the surface or from auxiliary wells. The design of an examination and movement-control system was added to the project.

The project was carried out between October 2003 and March 2004, continuing in 2005 with technical assistance, specifically for the adjustment stage of terrain treatments and protection systems. Construction of these tunnels has been successfully completed in a record-breaking term of three years and under top security measures.
